Antibiotics for strep throat in adults

A clinician selects the medicine after considering the test result, allergies, pregnancy, kidney health, possible interactions, and local prescribing guidance. Penicillin or amoxicillin is often selected when suitable, but the prescription must be individualised.

Group A strep infection can present with abrupt throat soreness, pain on swallowing, fever, red or coated tonsils, and tender neck glands. Those findings can overlap with other causes, so symptoms and examination cannot always separate bacterial from viral pharyngitis.

A rapid antigen swab can confirm the bacteria. In adults, a follow-up culture after a negative rapid result is not routinely required, although the clinician may choose one when the history or circumstances warrant it. Prominent cough, runny nose, hoarseness, or mouth ulcers favors a viral cause and may make strep testing unnecessary.

Follow the label exactly and finish the course unless the prescriber advises otherwise. If nausea, loose stools, or another side effect develops, contact a pharmacist or clinician for advice rather than adjusting the schedule yourself. Never use another person's medication.

Drink regularly and choose cool or soft food if swallowing hurts. Suitable paracetamol or ibuprofen may help some adults, but suitability depends on medical history, pregnancy, stomach or kidney problems, and other medicines. Reduce close contact and follow the clinician's advice about returning to work after fever settles and antibiotic treatment has begun.

Emergency assessment is needed for noisy or difficult breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, inability to manage saliva, collapse, confusion, or blue-grey lips. One-sided throat swelling, a muffled voice, difficulty opening the mouth, or rapidly increasing neck pain can signal an abscess and should be assessed urgently.

Contact the prescriber if improvement does not start as expected, the fever returns, a rash appears, or dehydration develops. After an antibiotic, sudden wheezing, facial swelling, widespread hives, or faintness may be a severe allergic reaction and requires emergency help.

Clarify whether the result confirms active strep infection, which side effects should prompt a call, and how the medicine fits with your regular prescriptions. Mention recurrent episodes, immune suppression, recent antibiotic use, and any past rheumatic fever or serious infection because these details can alter follow-up.
