Antibiotics for strep throat

A sore throat alone does not establish the diagnosis because viruses can produce similar symptoms. A clinician may use a rapid throat swab or culture before prescribing, particularly when there are no clear cold symptoms.

Strep throat is an infection of the throat and tonsils caused by group A streptococcus. It can present with sudden throat pain, painful swallowing, fever, inflamed tonsils, and tender glands at the front of the neck. Cough, a runny nose, hoarseness, or eye redness points more toward a viral illness, though assessment determines whether testing is appropriate.

Antibiotics act against susceptible bacteria; they do not treat viral pharyngitis. Avoiding unnecessary treatment reduces side effects and helps preserve antibiotic usefulness.

Take the chosen medicine at the dose and intervals on your prescription, and complete the prescribed course unless the clinician tells you to stop. Tell the prescriber about pregnancy, kidney problems, other medicines, and previous reactions to antibiotics. Do not share doses or save unfinished tablets for another illness.

Fluids, rest, soft foods, and suitable pain relief can make swallowing easier while treatment starts working. Check with a pharmacist or clinician before using pain medicines if you have another medical condition or take regular medication.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe neck swelling, marked drowsiness, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. These features can indicate airway difficulty, a deeper infection, or inadequate fluid intake.

Get medical advice if symptoms worsen, do not begin improving after starting treatment, or return soon after the course. Stop the medicine and obtain emergency help for facial or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives.

Ask whether a throat test confirmed group A strep, how long to stay away from work or school, and what to do if a dose is missed or vomiting occurs. If you have a penicillin allergy label, describe the original reaction rather than naming the allergy alone, because that detail influences which alternatives are suitable.
