Antibiotics for a facial skin rash

Facial redness can come from irritation, allergy, eczema, acne, viral illness, fungal infection, or inflammation as well as bacteria. Using an antibiotic for the wrong cause can delay useful treatment and may trigger diarrhoea, allergy, or skin irritation.

The pattern offers useful clues: crusting, pus, warmth, tenderness, rapid expansion, blisters, scaling, itching, and involvement near an eye point toward different diagnoses. Recent cosmetics, shaving, medicines, dental problems, injuries, and contact with someone who has a contagious rash also matter.

Treatment may be topical for a limited surface infection or oral for a deeper or spreading bacterial infection. A swab is sometimes useful when there is drainage, repeated infection, an unusual appearance, or poor response to initial care.

Pause new cosmetics and fragranced products, wash gently, avoid picking or squeezing lesions, and use a clean towel. Do not apply leftover antibiotic, steroid, or combination cream: steroid ingredients can change the appearance of infection and worsen some causes.

If treatment is prescribed, follow the directions for the specific product and keep it away from the eyes unless it is intended for eye use. Take a clear photograph in consistent lighting to help show whether the affected area is expanding.

Obtain urgent assessment for swelling or redness around an eye, eye pain, impaired vision, fever with a rapidly spreading rash, severe pain, skin turning dark, or blisters involving the eyes or mouth. Facial swelling with dental pain also needs prompt attention because the source may be beneath the skin.

Call emergency services when the lips, tongue, or throat swell, breathing becomes difficult, faintness occurs, or a widespread rash develops with severe illness. These can signal a serious allergic or systemic reaction.
