Antibiotics for bacteria on the skin

Short answer

Antibiotics treat bacterial skin infections, but the right medicine depends on the infection, its location, and sometimes a sample result.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Bacteria can live harmlessly on healthy skin, so their presence alone does not mean treatment is needed. A clinician looks for evidence of infection, such as spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pain, pus, or an infected wound.

How treatment is chosen

A small, surface-level infection may be managed with local wound care or a topical medicine. A deeper, larger, or spreading infection may require an oral antibiotic. An abscess often needs drainage because medicine may not clear a sealed pocket of pus on its own.

The likely bacterial species, allergy history, pregnancy, kidney or liver problems, recent antibiotic use, and local resistance patterns can affect the prescription. A swab or pus sample may help when the infection is severe, recurrent, unusual, or not improving.

What to do during treatment

Take the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and do not share it or use leftover tablets. Keep the affected skin clean, cover draining areas with a fresh dressing, wash your hands after touching the site, and avoid squeezing boils or abscesses.

Contact the prescriber if symptoms worsen, new areas appear, or the medicine causes troublesome vomiting, diarrhoea, or a rash. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, faintness, or a rapidly developing widespread rash after a dose.

When to seek medical care

Arrange prompt assessment for redness that is expanding, severe or increasing pain, fever, red streaks, pus, skin turning dark, or infection near the eye. Care should also be prompt when a wound is deep, contains a foreign object, follows an animal or human bite, or occurs alongside diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity.

Call emergency services if there is confusion, severe weakness, breathing trouble, collapse, or rapidly worsening illness. These symptoms require urgent evaluation rather than waiting to see whether an antibiotic begins to work.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether the area is infected or merely colonised, whether drainage or a sample is needed, how to care for the skin, which adverse effects need a call, and what change should be expected before follow-up. Mention medication allergies and any previous resistant infection.

Questions people ask

Does every positive skin swab need antibiotics?

No. A swab can detect bacteria that are living on the skin without causing disease. The result must be interpreted with the appearance of the skin and your symptoms.

Why might an abscess need drainage?

An abscess is a closed collection of pus. Opening and draining it can remove infected material that an antibiotic may not reach adequately.

Can I stop when the skin looks better?

Follow the duration on your prescription and contact the prescriber if you are unsure. Changing the course without advice may leave the infection undertreated or expose you to unnecessary medicine.
