Antibiotics for skin allergies

An allergic rash is driven by an immune reaction, not by bacteria. Depending on the cause, treatment may involve avoiding a trigger, moisturising the skin, or using an antihistamine or anti-inflammatory medicine. Antibiotics cannot switch off that allergic process and may themselves cause a rash.

Scratching or cracked eczema can damage the skin barrier and allow bacterial infection. Clues include increasing tenderness, warmth, swelling, pus, weeping with new crusting, or redness that continues to spread. These changes need assessment because an allergy flare can also look red and inflamed without being infected.

Stop contact with a suspected external trigger when it is safe to do so, rinse it from the skin if appropriate, and use bland fragrance-free moisturiser. Avoid scratching, strong soaps, and unprescribed antibiotic creams, which can irritate skin or trigger contact allergy. Photographing how the rash changes may help during a medical consultation.

Before taking any antibiotic, tell the prescriber about previous medicine reactions and describe their timing and features. Take a prescribed course according to its label and do not use another person's tablets. If the rash began after a new medicine, seek advice before the next dose rather than assuming the original allergy is worsening.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or lips. A widespread rash with blisters, peeling skin, painful mouth or eye sores, or marked illness also needs emergency assessment, especially after a new medicine. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, red streaks, or swelling around an eye because these features can indicate infection.

Ask whether the appearance fits allergy, irritation, infection, or another skin condition and what signs support that judgment. Discuss newly introduced medicines, cosmetics, fragrances, gloves, metals, plants, or workplace substances. If an antibiotic is proposed, clarify which infection it targets and how a new drug reaction should be reported.
