Antibiotics for penile discharge

A clinician may collect a urine sample or swab and may recommend treatment before results when the examination suggests urethral infection. The medicine must cover the suspected organism, and sexual partners may also need assessment or treatment.

Discharge from the urethral opening, especially with burning during urination, can occur with urethritis. Gonorrhoea and chlamydia are possible infectious causes, but other organisms, irritation and inflammation can produce overlapping symptoms.

Colour or thickness cannot reliably identify the cause. A clear account of recent sexual contact, condom use, urinary symptoms, sores, rashes, testicular discomfort and previous antibiotics helps the clinician choose suitable tests and immediate care.

Arrange a confidential medical or sexual-health assessment and avoid sexual contact until you and any partners have followed the clinician's treatment and testing advice. This reduces exposure while the cause is being clarified. Do not rely on washing, antiseptics or leftover tablets to clear an internal urethral infection.

Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed. Tell the prescriber about allergies and medicines already taken, because partial treatment can affect test interpretation. Follow instructions about partner notification, repeat testing and when sexual activity can safely resume.

Seek urgent care for sudden or severe testicular pain, a swollen or very tender testicle, inability to pass urine, fever with worsening genital pain, or rapidly spreading redness or swelling. New eye pain or discharge after genital-fluid exposure also warrants prompt examination.

Emergency services are needed for severe breathing difficulty, tongue or throat swelling, fainting or widespread blistering after taking an antibiotic.

Ask which samples are being taken, whether treatment should begin before results, how partners can access confidential care, which symptoms merit urgent review, and whether follow-up testing is advised after treatment.
