Antibiotics for an infected nipple piercing

The choice of antibiotic depends on the examination, allergy history, and whether infection is limited to the piercing channel or extends into surrounding breast tissue. Do not begin leftover medicine or use someone else’s prescription.

Mild tenderness or crusting can occur while a piercing heals. Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, worsening pain, foul-smelling discharge, pus, or fever are more concerning for infection. A painful lump can indicate a collection beneath the skin.

Metal sensitivity, friction, a tight bar, trauma, and scarring can mimic infection. Examination is especially useful because infection can track beyond the visible piercing opening, and discharge may be sampled when the cause or antibiotic choice is unclear.

Wash your hands before touching the area and clean it gently with sterile saline. Avoid squeezing, rotating the jewellery repeatedly, applying harsh antiseptics, or covering the site with an airtight dressing. Wear clean, non-rubbing clothing.

Do not remove the jewellery on your own unless a clinician advises this; the opening may close over trapped infection. A professional may decide that jewellery needs adjustment or removal. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as directed and return if symptoms do not improve.

Seek same-day assessment for spreading redness, a growing or very painful breast lump, pus, fever, chills, or red streaking. Get emergency help for confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, rapidly worsening swelling, or severe illness. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, immunocompromised, or living with poorly controlled diabetes should seek early medical advice.

Ask whether there is an abscess, whether a sample or imaging is needed, how the jewellery should be managed, and which changes should trigger reassessment. Share the piercing date, metal type, recent trauma, discharge pattern, allergies, and any medicines already tried.
