Antibiotics for a gum boil

A dentist may prescribe an antibiotic when infection is spreading, causes systemic illness or cannot be drained immediately. Definitive care may involve drainage, root canal treatment, gum treatment or removal of a tooth, depending on the cause.

A gum boil is a small swelling that may drain pus through the gum. It can form when infection from a tooth root or a deep gum pocket creates a drainage pathway. Drainage can reduce pressure and pain temporarily, but it does not show that the source has healed.

The dentist may examine the teeth and gums, test the suspected tooth and use dental imaging to locate the infection. This determines whether a procedure, an antibiotic or both are appropriate.

Arrange a dental visit even if the boil bursts or the discomfort settles. Do not squeeze, pierce or repeatedly press the swelling. Keep the area clean with gentle brushing, choose foods that are comfortable to chew and use pain relief only if it is suitable for your health and other medicines.

If antibiotics are prescribed, follow the directions and report rash, severe diarrhoea or other concerning effects. Saving tablets for another episode can delay the dental treatment that removes the source.

Seek urgent dental or medical care for increasing facial or neck swelling, fever, marked weakness, worsening pain, or difficulty opening the mouth. Go to emergency care for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, swelling near the eye, confusion or rapidly advancing swelling. These features can signal spread into deeper tissues.

Ask whether the source is a tooth or the surrounding gum, what procedure will control it, and whether the tooth can be restored. If an antibiotic is recommended, clarify why it is needed, how to take it, which side effects need attention and when the dental procedure will occur.
