Group B Streptococcus is a bacterium that can live in the bowel or genital tract without causing illness. In someone with burning urination, urgency, frequent urination or lower abdominal discomfort, growth in a properly collected urine culture can support a urinary infection diagnosis.

The clinician considers symptoms, sample quality, bacterial growth, other urine findings and susceptibility testing. This helps distinguish infection from colonisation or contamination and guides a suitable antibiotic.

Take the prescribed antibiotic at the stated times and complete the plan unless the prescriber changes it. Before starting, mention previous immediate reactions to penicillin or other antibiotics, pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney disease and medicines that could interact.
