Antibiotics for blepharitis

A clinician may prescribe an antibiotic ointment or drops for the eyelid margin. Oral antibiotics are sometimes considered when symptoms persist or when associated oil-gland inflammation is prominent. The choice depends on the examination, other medicines, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and how the eyelids have responded to self-care.

Blepharitis affects the edges of the eyelids, where eyelashes and oil glands sit. It can involve bacterial overgrowth, blocked oil glands, skin conditions, or a mixture of these. Crusting, burning, gritty eyes, redness, and lashes sticking together can occur. Antibiotics address a bacterial component; they do not replace measures that loosen debris and keep gland openings clear.

Similar discomfort can occur with dry eye, allergy, a stye, or conjunctivitis. An eye examination helps distinguish these problems when the diagnosis is uncertain or treatment has not worked.

Use the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and complete the advised course. Wash your hands before touching the eye area, soften crusts with a comfortably warm compress, and gently clean the eyelid margin using the method your clinician recommends. Avoid sharing towels or eye cosmetics, and pause contact-lens wear if the eye is irritated or your clinician advises it.

Do not use leftover antibiotic drops or another person's medicine. Eye preparations differ from skin medicines, and steroid-containing drops can be harmful when used without an appropriate eye assessment. Seek advice if the medicine causes marked swelling, a widespread rash, or worsening irritation.

Arrange prompt assessment for eye pain, sensitivity to light, blurred or reduced vision, a very red eyeball, injury, or symptoms that worsen despite treatment. Get urgent help for sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain, chemical exposure, or swelling around the eye with fever or difficulty moving the eye.

Contact a clinician if repeated flare-ups continue, a lump persists on the eyelid, or discharge becomes heavy. These features may require a closer eyelid and eye-surface examination rather than another antibiotic course.

Ask whether your pattern suggests blocked oil glands, a skin condition, infection, or another eye problem; whether ointment, drops, or tablets are appropriate; how to clean the eyelids; and when contact lenses or eye makeup can be used again. Mention antibiotic allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every eye medicine you currently use.
