Antibiotics for appendicitis

Antibiotics are an important part of appendicitis treatment, but the safest plan depends on the type and severity found during urgent hospital assessment. They may be given before surgery, after surgery when infection has spread, or as the main treatment for selected uncomplicated cases under close supervision.

Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix and can progress to perforation, an abscess or infection within the abdomen. The hospital team considers your symptoms, examination, blood tests and imaging when available. Antibiotics treat susceptible bacteria, while an operation removes the inflamed appendix and controls the source. Some presentations need prompt surgery; others allow discussion of antibiotic treatment and observation.

Get urgent medical assessment for new or worsening abdominal pain, especially when it moves towards the lower right side or occurs with nausea, vomiting, fever or loss of appetite. Do not start leftover antibiotics: they may partly suppress symptoms without controlling the source and can complicate treatment choices. Until assessed, follow the urgent-care team's advice about eating, drinking and pain relief because a procedure may be needed.

Go to an emergency department now for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, marked weakness, breathing difficulty, or pain that spreads across the abdomen. Sudden temporary easing of intense pain does not make the situation safe, because a perforated appendix can change the pain pattern. Return promptly if symptoms worsen during antibiotic treatment or after discharge.

You can ask whether the appendicitis appears uncomplicated, whether imaging shows a perforation or abscess, and why antibiotics, surgery or both are recommended. Clarify how the medicine will be given, what side effects matter, when eating can resume, what follow-up is planned and which symptoms mean you should return immediately. Mention medication allergies, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and any medicines that affect bleeding.
