Antibiotics and skin rash

Check for breathing or swallowing difficulty, facial swelling, blistering, skin pain, and sores in the mouth or eyes before doing anything else. Those features require urgent action. A new mild rash still deserves timely advice from the prescriber because the next-dose plan depends on the medicine and the reaction.

Raised, intensely itchy welts that move or change shape can be hives. Flat or slightly raised pink-red spots may develop later in a course and can have several causes. Tiny bumps limited to a sweaty or irritated area point to a different process than a symmetrical rash spreading across the body.

Record the antibiotic name, the time of the most recent dose, when the rash began, and whether it is changing. Take clear photographs in good light. Note itching, fever, joint pain, swelling, peeling, bruised-looking areas, and any mouth, eye, or genital soreness. These observations help a clinician judge severity and avoid an inaccurate allergy label.

For a mild, localised eruption with no red flags, contact the prescriber or pharmacist promptly and keep the medicine packaging available. They can advise whether to continue, pause, or change the antibiotic. Do not test the reaction by taking an extra dose, and do not share another person's antihistamine or prescription cream.

Use cool compresses, loose clothing, and an unperfumed moisturiser for comfort while awaiting advice. Avoid introducing new skin products that could confuse the picture. If a clinician identifies an antibiotic allergy, ask for the medicine name and reaction to be documented precisely rather than recording only a broad drug class.

Call emergency services for wheezing, trouble breathing, throat tightness, faintness, collapse, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Do not take another dose while awaiting emergency assessment.

Seek urgent same-day care for a rapidly spreading rash, blisters, peeling or painful skin, purple or bruised-looking patches, sores affecting the mouth or eyes, high fever, marked facial swelling, or a person who appears seriously unwell. These are not features to monitor at home.

Ask what the reaction is called, whether this particular antibiotic should be avoided, and which related medicines remain options. Confirm what should appear in your medical record and whether specialist allergy assessment would be useful before future treatment.
