Antibiotic treatment for perioral dermatitis

The medicine is selected according to the rash pattern, severity, previous treatment, pregnancy status and other health factors. Improvement may be gradual, so use it for the period prescribed rather than stopping as soon as the skin looks calmer.

Perioral dermatitis causes small inflamed bumps, dryness or burning around the mouth and sometimes around the nose or eyes. It can resemble acne, rosacea, contact irritation or infection, so an examination helps avoid unsuitable treatment.

Antibiotics used for this condition may reduce inflammation as well as affect skin bacteria. Potent steroid creams can temporarily suppress redness but may worsen or prolong the rash; a clinician can advise how to change a steroid safely if one has been used.

Apply a topical medicine only to the instructed area and wash your hands afterward. If tablets are prescribed, follow the label and check whether food, antacids, supplements or sun exposure affect how that particular medicine should be used.

Keep skin care simple with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser if tolerated. Pause heavy cosmetics and irritating exfoliants, avoid picking the bumps, and introduce products again one at a time after the rash settles.

Arrange a review if the rash spreads toward the eyes, becomes painful or crusted, worsens steadily, or fails to respond within the timeframe your clinician described. The diagnosis or treatment may need adjustment.

Get urgent help for facial or throat swelling, breathing trouble, faintness, or a widespread blistering or peeling rash after starting medicine. Eye pain, light sensitivity or changes in vision also warrant prompt medical assessment.

Ask whether the diagnosis could be another facial rash, which products to stop, where to apply treatment, and when to expect review. Mention pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergies, digestive problems and all prescription or non-prescription creams used on the face.
