Antibiotic Injections for Cellulitis: What to Expect

Cellulitis is an infection in deeper skin tissue that commonly presents with spreading redness, warmth, swelling and tenderness. A clinician may use an injection when illness is more pronounced, swallowing or absorbing tablets is difficult, or the chosen medicine is given that way. Some patients then continue with oral medicine; others need treatment in a healthcare facility.

Assessment includes the affected site, speed of spread, fever or systemic symptoms, allergies, pregnancy, kidney function, other medicines and health conditions. The clinician also looks for a wound, ulcer, athlete's foot, bite or abscess that may need separate care.

An injection is not automatically stronger than every tablet. The right route depends on the medicine and clinical situation. If a pocket of pus is present, drainage may be needed because antibiotics do not physically empty it.

Follow the written plan for further injections or tablets and attend the scheduled review. Rest and elevate an affected arm or leg when practical. Keep any wound clean as instructed, drink fluids if allowed for your health conditions, and avoid applying unapproved remedies.

Monitor the border of redness, discomfort, swelling and general wellbeing. If the clinician marks the edge, do not scrub the mark away. A little local soreness can occur at an injection site, but increasing swelling, hives or widespread rash warrants medical advice.

Seek prompt reassessment if redness continues to spread, pain or swelling becomes worse, fever appears, blisters develop, pus collects, or you cannot keep oral medicine down. Call emergency services for confusion, faintness, severe breathlessness, mottled or dusky skin, or rapidly deteriorating illness.

Cellulitis around an eye, severe pain out of proportion to visible changes, or numbness and darkening skin requires urgent in-person evaluation. Breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat after an antibiotic may signal a severe allergic reaction and is also an emergency.

Confirm the antibiotic name, the next dose, the expected review point, and who to contact if the border expands. Ask whether a wound needs dressing, whether an abscess is present, and how to care for cracks between the toes or another possible entry point.
