Antibiotics for molluscum contagiosum

Molluscum is caused by a virus, so antibacterial medicines cannot remove the underlying infection. A clinician may consider an antibiotic only when scratching, picking or broken skin has allowed bacteria to infect the surrounding area.

Molluscum bumps can become red, swollen or crusted as the immune system reacts to them. This inflammation can occur while a spot is resolving and does not by itself show that bacteria are present. Pus, increasing warmth, spreading redness and worsening tenderness are more concerning for a secondary bacterial infection.

The appearance and pattern matter because unnecessary antibiotics can cause side effects and will not shorten the viral illness. A clinician can examine the area and decide whether treatment is needed.

Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or scratching the bumps, and cover broken spots with a clean dressing. Do not share towels, razors or clothing that touches the affected skin. Wash hands after applying skin care or changing a dressing.

If a clinician prescribes an antibiotic for a bacterial infection, use it exactly as directed and do not share leftovers. Treatments aimed at individual molluscum lesions, such as freezing or removal, are separate decisions and may not be needed for every patient.

Seek prompt assessment if redness is spreading beyond a bump, pain or swelling is increasing, pus is collecting, red streaks appear, or fever develops. Earlier review is sensible for extensive skin disease, eczema, reduced immunity, or lesions close to the eye.

Get urgent help for severe illness, marked drowsiness, breathing difficulty, rapidly advancing discoloration, or swelling around the eye that affects vision.

Ask whether the redness looks like normal immune inflammation or bacterial infection, what changes should trigger reassessment, and whether covering or treating particular lesions would reduce irritation or spread.
