Antibiotics for a Bartholin cyst during pregnancy

A blocked Bartholin gland can form a lump near the vaginal opening. A small, painless cyst may not need active treatment, while infection can produce increasing vulval pain, warmth, redness, tenderness or pus. Once a pocket of infected fluid forms, medicine may not empty it; an examination helps distinguish a simple cyst from an abscess and guides treatment during pregnancy.

Contact your obstetric or gynaecology team before taking leftover antibiotics or medicines obtained for someone else. The prescriber considers the likely infection, medicine allergies, other treatments and stage of pregnancy. Until assessed, keep the area clean and dry, wear loose clothing and avoid squeezing or piercing the lump. Warm water may ease discomfort, but it does not replace assessment when pain or swelling is increasing.

Seek same-day medical advice for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever, chills, spreading redness, foul-smelling drainage or difficulty walking, sitting or passing urine. Urgent maternity assessment is also appropriate if you feel faint, cannot keep fluids down, have vaginal bleeding, contractions or reduced fetal movement. These symptoms guide urgency; they do not identify the cause on their own.

Ask whether the lump is a cyst or abscess, whether drainage is needed, and why a particular antibiotic is suitable in your pregnancy. Confirm the dose instructions, possible side effects and what to do if you vomit after a dose. Tell the clinician about allergies, recent antibiotics, recurrent cysts and any new vaginal discharge or urinary symptoms.
