Anti-vertigo treatment and safe symptom relief

Vertigo describes a false sense of movement, not a single disease. Treatment may involve a repositioning manoeuvre, migraine management, treatment of an ear disorder, or short-term medicine for severe symptoms. A clinical assessment helps distinguish these possibilities.

Medicines used for vertigo can reduce nausea, vomiting or the sensation of motion, but they do not correct every cause. Some can cause drowsiness, blurred vision or slower reactions. Prolonged use may also hinder the brain's natural adjustment after certain inner-ear problems.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo commonly presents with brief spinning triggered by head movement and may respond to the Epley manoeuvre rather than ongoing tablets. Meniere's disease can present with vertigo alongside fluctuating hearing symptoms, while migraine can present with vertigo with or without a typical headache. An ear infection can also produce dizziness or balance disturbance.

Sit or lie down as soon as spinning starts, move your head slowly, use support when standing, and keep the route to the bathroom clear. Avoid driving, cycling, ladders, swimming alone and operating machinery while dizzy or after taking a sedating medicine.

Record triggers, episode length, hearing changes, headache, recent infection and the medicines you took. Arrange an assessment when vertigo is new, recurring or disrupting daily life. Do not attempt a repositioning manoeuvre without guidance if you have significant neck, back, circulation or eye problems.

Call emergency services if sudden vertigo comes with facial droop, weakness or numbness on one side, difficulty speaking, double vision, inability to walk, loss of consciousness, a new severe headache, chest pain or breathing difficulty. These features require urgent assessment for causes affecting the brain or circulation.

Seek prompt care after a head injury, for repeated vomiting or dehydration, or when vertigo occurs with sudden hearing loss, high fever, severe ear pain or discharge. Urgency is based on these warning signs, not on whether a benign inner-ear cause seems possible.

Ask what diagnosis fits the pattern, whether hearing or balance testing is needed, and whether a manoeuvre could help. If medicine is offered, clarify its purpose, how long to use it, whether it causes drowsiness, and which medicines or alcohol to avoid.

Discuss when it is safe to drive or return to work, particularly if balance is impaired. If attacks recur, request a plan covering symptom control, follow-up and the changes that should trigger urgent reassessment.
