Anti-tetanus toxoid vaccine explained

Tetanus bacteria can enter damaged skin and release a toxin that affects the nerves and muscles. The vaccine contains toxoid, a treated toxin that stimulates an immune response without causing tetanus. Some tetanus vaccines are combined with protection against diphtheria or whooping cough.

The label on your vaccination record shows which combination you received. Keeping this record makes future decisions easier when you need routine doses, travel advice, pregnancy care, or treatment after an injury.

Bring any available vaccination record to the appointment. Explain whether you have had a serious reaction after a previous dose, are unwell with a fever, have a condition or treatment that weakens immunity, or are pregnant. The clinician can select the appropriate product and timing.

Soreness, redness, or swelling where the vaccine was given can occur, along with tiredness, headache, or a mild fever. Rest, fluids, gentle arm movement, and a cool compress may help. Check before taking a pain reliever if you have ongoing health conditions or use regular medicines.

Call emergency services if breathing becomes difficult or you develop facial or throat swelling, collapse, severe weakness, or widespread hives soon after vaccination. A severe allergic reaction needs immediate treatment.

Contact a healthcare service promptly when an injection-site reaction is rapidly worsening, pain is severe, fever is persistent, or you feel markedly unwell. Any dirty, deep, puncture, bite, burn, or crush wound deserves timely assessment when your tetanus vaccination status is unknown.
