What should you know about anti tetanus toxoid injection?

Tetanus is an infection caused by bacteria that can enter through broken skin, particularly a deep, dirty, puncture, or burn wound. The toxoid in the vaccine is inactive, so it cannot cause tetanus; it trains the immune system to recognise the toxin made by the bacteria.

A clinician considers the wound, your previous tetanus vaccinations, and how long it has been since your last dose. A vaccine dose is different from tetanus immunoglobulin, which provides ready-made antibodies and may be considered for some higher-risk wounds when vaccination protection is incomplete.

Keep the injection site clean and avoid rubbing it. Soreness, mild redness, swelling, tiredness, or a low fever can occur for a short time. Rest, drink fluids, and use a pain or fever medicine only if it is suitable for you and used according to the label or a clinician’s advice.

If the injection followed an injury, follow the wound-care instructions you were given. Complete any recommended vaccine schedule, and tell the clinic about earlier vaccine reactions, immune problems, or medicines that affect immunity before another dose.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, fainting, or sudden severe weakness after the injection. These may signal a serious allergic reaction.

Contact a clinician promptly if the wound becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, or produces pus, or if you develop fever or feel increasingly unwell. Tetanus symptoms can include jaw stiffness, difficulty swallowing, and painful muscle spasms; these require emergency assessment.
