Tetanus toxoid is available in combination vaccines, and the formulation used for a child may differ from that used for an adolescent or adult. The correct plan may be a routine scheduled dose, completion of a missed primary series, or a booster after an injury.

How dosing is decided

A dose is not selected by body weight in the way some medicines are. The vaccinator follows the approved formulation and route for the person’s age and previous vaccine course.

After a wound, the clinician also evaluates contamination, depth, tissue damage, and whether the initial vaccine series is complete. An uncertain history may be managed differently from a clearly documented course. Selected wounds may also call for tetanus immune globulin, which is separate from toxoid vaccine.

What to do

Bring a vaccination card or electronic record and identify any tetanus-containing injection received after an earlier wound. Mention pregnancy, immune-system problems, serious allergies, and any severe reaction following a previous vaccine.

Do not repeat a dose simply because two records use different brand names; several combination vaccines contain tetanus toxoid. A clinician or pharmacist can compare the components and dates. If a dose was delayed, seek a catch-up assessment instead of assuming the whole course must restart.

When to seek care

Arrange timely review for a puncture, bite, burn, crush injury, contaminated wound, retained foreign object, or wound with damaged tissue, particularly when vaccine records are incomplete or unavailable.

Jaw stiffness, muscle spasms, difficulty swallowing, or breathing difficulty are emergency warning signs. Obtain immediate help rather than waiting for a vaccination appointment.
