How long is an anti-tetanus shot valid?

Tetanus vaccination builds protection against a toxin made by bacteria that can enter damaged skin. A routine dose supports longer-term protection, while a booster may be advised after an injury when protection may have weakened or the wound is more likely to contain contamination. The decision is based on the date and type of your last dose, whether you completed the recommended primary series, and the nature of the injury. A clean, minor cut is assessed differently from a deep puncture, crush injury, burn, or wound containing soil or saliva. An injection given during wound care may be a vaccine booster; in some circumstances, a clinician may consider tetanus immunoglobulin for additional short-term support. These are different products, so an old record saying “tetanus shot” may not answer every question.

Rinse the wound under clean running water, remove visible dirt only if it comes away easily, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not pour harsh chemicals into deep tissue or close a dirty wound yourself. Contact a clinic promptly if the wound is deep, punctured, badly bruised, contaminated, or caused by an animal or human bite. Tell the clinician when your last tetanus-containing vaccine was given and whether you have a written record. If you cannot recall your history, say so rather than guessing. The clinician can check the wound and decide whether vaccination, immunoglobulin, cleaning, or another treatment is appropriate. Seek urgent medical assessment for a wound with uncontrolled bleeding, loss of feeling or movement, exposed bone, a retained object, severe pain, or signs of a serious bite. Get urgent help if you develop jaw stiffness, trouble swallowing, painful muscle tightening, breathing difficulty, or widespread spasms after an injury. These symptoms need prompt assessment and should not be used to decide whether a previous shot is still valid. Redness that spreads, increasing warmth or swelling, pus, fever, or worsening pain can indicate a wound infection and also warrants medical review.
