Anti-tetanus injection during pregnancy

A tetanus-containing vaccine helps the pregnant person's immune system produce antibodies against tetanus toxin. Some antenatal programmes use a combined vaccine that also protects against other infections and helps pass antibodies to the baby before birth. The exact product and timing depend on local guidance and individual circumstances.

After a tetanus-prone wound, vaccination decisions are based on the injury and recorded vaccine history. Tetanus immunoglobulin is a separate antibody medicine that may be considered for certain higher-risk wounds when protection is incomplete or unclear.

At an antenatal appointment, show your vaccine record and ask which tetanus-containing vaccine is recommended in the UAE schedule. Tell the clinician about earlier severe vaccine reactions, current illness, medicines that suppress the immune system and any recent vaccination received elsewhere.

For a cut, puncture, bite, burn or contaminated injury, wash the area with soap and running water and arrange clinical review. Obtain urgent wound care for uncontrolled bleeding, a deep puncture or crush injury, an embedded object, reduced movement or sensation, an animal bite, or extensive contamination. Fever, spreading redness, discharge, worsening swelling or escalating pain need assessment. Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, severe weakness, jaw stiffness, difficulty swallowing or painful muscle spasms.

Ask which vaccine product is planned, what infections it covers, when it should be given and whether any later doses remain. Following an injury, confirm whether the wound needs further cleaning, closure, antibiotics or tetanus immunoglobulin.
