What should pregnant people know about anti-tetanus vaccination?

The vaccine uses tetanus toxoid and is not a live tetanus vaccine. The product may be combined with protection against other infections. A maternity clinician or vaccinator can identify the formulation and timing used in the local pregnancy schedule.

Vaccination trains the pregnant person’s immune system to recognise tetanus toxin. Antibodies produced by the mother can cross the placenta and contribute to the baby’s early protection. This does not replace the child’s own vaccinations after birth.

A recommendation during pregnancy may relate to the routine maternity programme, an incomplete earlier course, or wound management. These situations are assessed differently. Previous doses still matter, so provide a record rather than assuming that pregnancy automatically resets the vaccination course.

Tell the maternity team about previous vaccines, serious allergic reactions, fever or current illness, immune-system conditions, and medicines. Ask for the vaccine’s complete name because combined formulations protect against different diseases. Keep the administration record with your pregnancy notes.

If vaccination is being considered after an injury, wash the wound under clean running water and seek assessment based on its depth and contamination. Describe bites, punctures, burns, crush injuries, soil exposure, and any retained object. The clinician can decide whether vaccination, immune globulin, wound treatment, or infection management is appropriate.

Contact the maternity or vaccination team if you develop symptoms that concern you after the injection or if you are unsure whether a scheduled dose was missed. Injection-site soreness and feeling unwell can occur, but a clinician should assess symptoms that are severe, persistent, or worsening.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or widespread hives after vaccination. Following a wound, urgent warning signs include uncontrolled bleeding, spreading redness, pus, fever, jaw stiffness, trouble swallowing, muscle spasms, or breathing difficulty.

Ask which infections the proposed vaccine covers, why it is recommended at this point in pregnancy, and how it fits with doses already received. If you have a wound, clarify whether the recommendation is routine maternity vaccination or additional wound-related prevention and what follow-up the injury needs.
