What should you know about anti-tetanus care for a cat bite?

A vaccine is only one part of bite care. Cat teeth can create narrow punctures that carry bacteria beneath the skin, so a clinician may need to assess infection risk, tendon or joint involvement, and whether other preventive treatment is required.

Broken skin creates a route for contamination. The clinician considers how deep the bite is, where it occurred, how readily it can be cleaned, and whether your tetanus vaccine course is complete. If protection is incomplete or uncertain, vaccination may be advised; selected wounds may also prompt consideration of tetanus immune globulin.

Tetanus prevention does not protect against the other bacteria found in a cat’s mouth. Antibiotic treatment, when indicated, serves a different purpose. The animal’s health and availability for observation may also affect assessment for rabies prevention under local public-health guidance.

Move away from the animal safely, then wash the bite thoroughly with soap and running water. Allow gentle rinsing into puncture openings, pat the area dry, and cover it with a clean dressing. Apply steady pressure with clean material if it bleeds, and remove rings from an injured hand before swelling develops.

Arrange clinical advice promptly, especially for punctures on a hand, finger, face, foot, or near a joint. Bring your vaccination record and, if safely available, information about the cat, its vaccination status, ownership, behaviour, and where the exposure occurred. Do not attempt to capture an unfamiliar animal yourself.

Get urgent care for uncontrolled bleeding, a deep wound, severe pain, numbness, reduced finger or joint movement, or a bite involving the eye. Spreading redness, increasing warmth or swelling, pus, fever, red streaks, or tender swollen glands can indicate infection.

Emergency care is needed for trouble breathing, confusion, collapse, rapidly worsening illness, jaw stiffness, swallowing difficulty, or muscle spasms. People with reduced immunity, poor circulation, or significant chronic illness should mention this when seeking bite advice because management may differ.

Ask whether the wound needs deeper cleaning, imaging, antibiotics, or specialist review, and whether it should remain open rather than be closed. Confirm whether your vaccine record supports a tetanus dose and whether local rabies guidance applies to this animal and exposure.
