What should you know about an anti-tetanus dose?

An anti-tetanus dose may be recommended after an injury when the wound or your vaccination history creates a risk of tetanus. A healthcare professional considers how the injury happened, whether the wound is deep or contaminated, and which tetanus-containing vaccines you have received. The dose may be a tetanus vaccine booster; some higher-risk wounds also require tetanus immune globulin, which provides temporary protection. These are different products and are not interchangeable.

Tetanus is caused by a toxin made by bacteria that can enter through broken skin. Puncture wounds, burns, crush injuries, and wounds containing soil or debris can provide a route in. Vaccination trains the immune system to recognise the toxin, while immune globulin supplies ready-made antibodies for short-term protection when a clinician judges them necessary. An injection does not replace careful wound cleaning, removal of foreign material, or treatment of an established infection.

Your previous vaccination record matters. A person with a documented, completed course may need different care from someone whose records are incomplete or unavailable. Tell the clinician about allergies, pregnancy, immune problems, and any vaccines received elsewhere.

Rinse the wound with clean running water, wash the surrounding skin, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not dig into a deep wound or try to remove an embedded object yourself. Arrange a prompt medical assessment if the wound is deep, dirty, caused by an animal or human bite, or associated with a burn, crush injury, or puncture. Take any vaccination record you have, but do not delay assessment because the record is missing.

A clinician may clean the wound, check your immunisation history, and decide whether vaccination, immune globulin, both, or neither is appropriate. Follow the recommended follow-up plan and seek advice before taking another tetanus-containing product.

Get urgent medical help for a wound with uncontrolled bleeding, severe tissue damage, loss of feeling or movement, spreading redness, increasing swelling, pus, or fever. Seek emergency care immediately if you develop jaw stiffness, trouble swallowing, painful muscle spasms, breathing difficulty, or widespread muscle rigidity. These symptoms can occur with serious illness and need assessment in an emergency setting; do not wait for a vaccine appointment.
