What to know about the anti-rubella vaccine

MMR is a live vaccine that also protects against measles and mumps. It cannot cause rubella infection in someone you meet after vaccination.

The vaccine trains the immune system to recognise rubella before a future exposure. Preventing infection matters especially around pregnancy because rubella can harm a developing baby, particularly when infection occurs early in pregnancy.

A clinician may review your vaccination record or arrange an immunity blood test when your history is unclear, especially before pregnancy or in work that involves close contact with patients or children. A blood test showing immunity and a documented vaccine history are interpreted in context rather than used interchangeably without review.

Tell the vaccinating clinician if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, have a weakened immune system, recently received blood products, take medicines that suppress immunity, or previously had a severe allergic reaction to a vaccine component. MMR is generally not given during pregnancy; if protection is needed, vaccination can often be arranged after delivery.

Bring any available immunisation record to the appointment. After the injection, mild soreness, fever, a light rash, or temporary joint discomfort can occur. Rest, drink fluids, and ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain or fever medicine is suitable for you. Follow the clinician's advice about timing pregnancy after vaccination.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, severe weakness, or widespread hives soon after vaccination, as these can signal a serious allergic reaction.

Contact a clinician promptly for a seizure, unusual bruising or bleeding, a fever that is severe or not settling, or symptoms that concern you. If you discover that you were pregnant when vaccinated, contact your obstetric clinician for individual guidance; vaccination alone is not a reason to assume the pregnancy has been harmed.

Ask whether your existing records show adequate rubella protection, whether you need an immunity blood test, and whether any medicine or health condition changes when you can receive MMR. If you are planning pregnancy, confirm when to vaccinate and how long to wait before trying to conceive.
