Anti-nausea pills: uses, side effects and safe use

Some products make people sleepy, dizzy, constipated or dry-mouthed. Follow the label or prescription, avoid taking extra doses when relief is incomplete, and check before combining products.

Nausea is a symptom rather than a single illness. Medicines act on different signalling pathways between the stomach, balance system and brain, so a product suited to travel sickness may not suit nausea linked to a stomach illness or another medicine.

The cause still needs attention. Gastroenteritis and food poisoning can present with nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, while gallstones can present with nausea alongside upper abdominal pain. Treating nausea may improve comfort without correcting dehydration, infection, pain or another underlying problem.

Read the active ingredient, dose and warnings rather than relying only on the brand name. Tell a pharmacist or doctor about pregnancy, breastfeeding, glaucoma, urinary problems, heart rhythm concerns, liver or kidney illness, and every medicine or supplement you take.

Swallow only as directed. If vomiting follows a dose, do not automatically repeat it because some medicine may already have been absorbed. Sip oral fluids regularly, choose plain foods when appetite returns, and avoid driving or alcohol if the medicine causes drowsiness.

Seek urgent medical care for vomiting with severe or worsening abdominal pain, chest pain, a severe headache, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, blood or dark coffee-ground material in vomit, green vomit, or difficulty breathing. These features need assessment rather than another anti-nausea dose.

Prompt advice is also needed when you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, feel markedly weak or dizzy, develop swelling or a rash after a medicine, or have persistent symptoms. Babies, older adults and people with significant medical conditions can become unwell from fluid loss more quickly.

Ask which cause fits your other symptoms, whether the medicine interacts with your regular treatment, how to handle a missed or vomited dose, and which adverse effects mean you should stop it. Mention when nausea began, its triggers, associated pain, bowel changes, fever and whether you can drink and urinate normally.
