Choosing and using an anti-nausea medicine

These medicines work through different pathways in the brain or digestive system. A product useful for travel sickness may not suit nausea related to migraine, pregnancy, infection, treatment side effects, or delayed stomach emptying.

Treatment can reduce the sensation of sickness and make drinking easier, yet it may not remove the underlying trigger. Vomiting with diarrhoea and fever, pain under the ribs, burning reflux, a new headache, or symptoms after a medicine each calls for a different line of assessment.

Possible effects vary by drug and can include sleepiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, restlessness, or changes in movement. Certain options need extra caution with heart rhythm problems, glaucoma, urinary retention, liver disease, or medicines that cause sedation.

Tell the pharmacist or prescriber when nausea began, what seems to trigger it, whether you are vomiting, and which symptoms occur alongside it. Share all prescriptions, non-prescription products, supplements, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and relevant medical conditions.

Read the label for timing, food instructions, missed doses, and effects on driving. Use the supplied measuring device for liquids, avoid taking two products with the same active ingredient, and do not add alcohol or another sedating medicine without checking. Continue small sips of fluid if tolerated.

Emergency assessment is appropriate for vomiting with severe chest or abdominal pain, trouble breathing, fainting, confusion, new weakness, a stiff neck, a sudden intense headache, blood or dark material in vomit, or suspected poisoning.

Seek prompt advice if fluids will not stay down, urine becomes scant, dizziness occurs on standing, vomiting follows a head injury, or the prescribed medicine causes marked drowsiness, muscle stiffness, uncontrolled movements, agitation, palpitations, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty.

Ask what cause the treatment is targeting, when benefit should be noticeable, how long to use it, and what to do if you vomit after a dose. Confirm whether it affects driving and which adverse effects mean stopping the medicine or seeking urgent help.
