Over-the-counter anti-nausea medicines

A product for motion sickness may not help nausea caused by reflux, infection or a medicine side effect. Describe the timing, triggers and accompanying symptoms to a pharmacist instead of selecting by brand name alone.

Sedating antihistamines act on balance pathways and can suit motion-related nausea. Indigestion or reflux products work on stomach acid rather than the vomiting pathway. Oral rehydration solution does not suppress nausea, but it replaces water and salts lost through vomiting or diarrhoea.

Side effects differ between ingredients. Sleepiness and blurred vision affect safe driving, while dry mouth, constipation or difficulty urinating may be troublesome for people with particular medical conditions. A familiar brand can still be unsafe when combined with another product containing the same ingredient.

Start by sipping fluid and avoiding a large, fatty or strongly scented meal. Note whether nausea follows travel, meals, a new medicine, alcohol, headache, pain or diarrhoea; this pattern helps a pharmacist direct you to suitable care.

Read the active ingredient, age restriction, dose, warnings and maximum treatment period on the package. Ask before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for a child, or if you have glaucoma, urinary problems, liver or kidney disease, heart rhythm issues or several regular medicines. Never use a sedating product before driving.

Seek same-day advice if vomiting continues, you cannot retain fluids, urine becomes scant or dark, you feel faint, symptoms follow a new prescription, or nausea keeps returning without a clear trigger. A clinician may need to check hydration and identify the cause.

Emergency assessment is warranted for chest pressure, breathing difficulty, collapse, confusion, sudden weakness, a severe headache, a stiff neck, intense or localised abdominal pain, a swollen rigid abdomen, or blood or green material in vomit. Suspected poisoning or medicine overdose also needs immediate help.

Ask what cause the product is designed for, whether it duplicates any medicine you take, which adverse effects should make you stop, and when symptoms should be medically reviewed. Tell the pharmacist if you need to drive or remain alert for work or caring responsibilities.
