Medication for nausea with diarrhoea

Short answer
When nausea and diarrhoea occur together, fluid replacement comes first and medication should match the suspected cause and your health needs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Should you take medicine for nausea and diarrhoea?
An anti-nausea medicine may make drinking easier, but it does not replace lost water and salts. A diarrhoea-stopping product is unsuitable in some situations, particularly when there is blood in the stool, fever or suspected infection.
Why the cause changes the choice
Gastroenteritis and food poisoning can present with nausea, vomiting, loose stools and abdominal cramps. Medicines that slow the bowel can hold infectious material in the gut and may mask worsening symptoms.
Other medicines can also trigger digestive symptoms. A pharmacist needs to know your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions and current treatments before recommending a product. Children, older adults and people with kidney, liver or heart problems can become unwell from fluid loss more readily.
What to do at home
Take frequent small sips of oral rehydration solution or another tolerated fluid. Oral rehydration products contain a measured balance of water, sugar and salts; mix them exactly as directed. Resume light, familiar foods when appetite returns rather than forcing a large meal.
Check the active ingredients before combining products because different brands may contain the same medicine. Avoid alcohol, and do not drive if an anti-nausea product makes you sleepy. If a prescription medicine seems to be the trigger, contact the prescriber before changing or stopping it.
Signs that need medical attention
Arrange prompt care if you cannot keep fluids down, urinate much less than usual, have a very dry mouth, feel faint on standing or become unusually drowsy. Seek assessment as well for continuing diarrhoea, worsening pain, fever or symptoms after recent antibiotics or travel.
Obtain urgent help for blood or black stool, vomit containing blood or green material, severe or localised abdominal pain, a rigid abdomen, confusion, collapse or breathing difficulty. A young child with reduced responsiveness, no tears or markedly fewer wet nappies also needs urgent review.
What to ask a clinician or pharmacist
Ask which active ingredient is appropriate, what side effects could overlap with dehydration, and whether it interacts with your regular medicines. Mention blood in stool, fever, recent antibiotics, travel, pregnancy and any long-term condition before purchasing treatment.

Questions people ask
Can I take an anti-nausea medicine and a diarrhoea medicine together?
Sometimes, but the combination depends on the cause, your medical history and the active ingredients. A pharmacist can check for duplication, interactions and reasons to avoid bowel-slowing medicine.
What should I drink if nausea makes fluids difficult?
Try small, frequent sips rather than a full glass. An oral rehydration solution replaces salts as well as water and should be mixed according to its directions.
Should I stop a regular prescription if diarrhoea begins?
Do not stop it automatically. Contact the prescriber or pharmacist because abrupt withdrawal may be unsafe, while dehydration can change how some medicines affect the body.
