Anti-Melasma Treatment Explained

Short answer
Melasma treatment pairs daily light protection with carefully chosen topical or procedural care and a realistic maintenance plan.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Reduce pigment without provoking inflammation

- Broad-spectrum and visible-light protection
- After improvement
- Maintenance may help limit recurrence
Treatment in brief
Treatment is gradual because pigment production can be reactivated by light, heat, hormonal changes, and inflammation. An aggressive approach can irritate the skin and leave the patches darker, particularly in pigment-prone skin.
How a treatment plan is selected
A dermatologist first checks whether the colour and distribution fit melasma rather than another pigment condition. The plan may reflect your skin tone, sensitivity, current products, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, previous reactions, and whether pigment appears mainly near the surface or deeper in the skin.
Topical treatment may reduce pigment formation or support more even turnover. Procedures such as a chemical peel, microneedling, skin-brightening treatment, or laser toning may be considered for selected patients, but they do not replace protection from light.
Use treatment without overloading the skin
Apply prescribed products only to the areas and at the frequency directed. Keep the rest of the routine simple with mild cleansing, moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sunscreen. A tinted sunscreen can help reduce exposure to visible light, which may contribute to melasma.
Avoid adding several exfoliants, peels, or brightening products at once. Track irritation and changes with photographs taken under similar lighting. Tell the treating clinician about pregnancy plans and all creams, supplements, or procedures you use so unsuitable ingredients and combinations can be avoided.
When to stop and seek care
Contact the treating clinic if a product causes persistent burning, marked redness, cracking, swelling, or rapidly worsening pigmentation. Prompt assessment is appropriate for blistering, severe pain, facial swelling, or symptoms close to the eyes after a treatment.
A patch that becomes raised, bleeds, develops an irregular surface, or changes differently from the surrounding melasma also deserves examination. Do not assume every dark facial mark is melasma or cover a changing lesion with stronger lightening agents.
Plan the consultation
Ask what diagnosis supports the plan, what early irritation should look like, and which products must be paused before a procedure. Clarify how improvement will be judged, what maintenance may involve, and what alternatives are available if your skin becomes irritated.

Questions people ask
Is a procedure enough to control melasma?
A procedure alone is rarely the whole plan. Ongoing light protection and suitable skincare help preserve improvement and reduce irritation-related darkening.
Why can melasma look darker during treatment?
Inflammation from an unsuitable or overly intensive product or procedure can stimulate more pigmentation. New darkening should be discussed with the treating clinician.
Can I use melasma treatments during pregnancy?
Some ingredients and procedures are not appropriate during pregnancy. Check every active product with your obstetric clinician or dermatologist before use.
