How the structures involved in Ulcerative Colitis differ from normal

Short answer

Anti-inflammatory medicines can reduce inflammation from ulcerative colitis, but the appropriate medicine and follow-up depend on disease activity and individual health factors.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main aim
Reduce bowel inflammation and control symptoms.
Treatment form
Medicine may be oral or rectal, depending on where inflammation is located.
Monitoring
The plan may include symptom review and laboratory checks.

What anti-inflammatory treatment means

Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation in the lining of the large bowel. Medicines used to control that inflammation include aminosalicylates and corticosteroids. Aminosalicylates may be used to settle active disease and help maintain control, while corticosteroids are generally used for a flare rather than ongoing maintenance. Treatment may be taken by mouth or delivered directly to the rectum, depending on which part of the bowel is affected.

A clinician selects treatment after considering symptom severity, the extent of bowel inflammation, previous responses, other medicines, pregnancy plans, and relevant medical conditions. Blood tests, stool tests, or bowel assessment may be needed to distinguish active inflammation from infection and to guide monitoring.

What to do while taking treatment

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed, including rectal preparations if they are part of the plan. Do not stop a corticosteroid suddenly unless the prescribing clinician gives you a tapering schedule. Keep track of bowel frequency, visible blood, urgency, abdominal discomfort, fever, appetite, and whether symptoms interrupt sleep. These details help the care team judge whether inflammation is settling.

Report troublesome effects and attend requested monitoring. Some anti-inflammatory medicines require checks of kidney function, blood counts, or liver function. If symptoms worsen despite treatment, contact the prescribing service instead of increasing the dose yourself. Long-term care may also include discussion of bowel surveillance based on the duration and extent of colitis.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent medical assessment for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, heavy or persistent rectal bleeding, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, marked weakness, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Fever with worsening diarrhoea or pain also needs prompt advice because infection and a severe flare can appear similar.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse after a medicine. Contact the prescribing clinician promptly if you develop a widespread rash, unusual bruising, yellowing of the skin or eyes, reduced urination, or other new symptoms that began after treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which part of the bowel is inflamed, whether oral or rectal treatment fits that pattern, how you will know the medicine is working, and which adverse effects require a call. Clarify the monitoring schedule, what to do if you miss a dose, whether any current medicines could interact, and whom to contact if a flare begins outside normal clinic hours.

Questions people ask

Can I stop treatment when I feel better?

Do not stop on your own. Some medicines help maintain control after symptoms improve, and corticosteroids may need gradual dose reduction. Ask the prescriber for a specific plan.

Are anti-inflammatory medicines the same as common painkillers?

No. Medicines used to treat bowel inflammation are selected specifically for ulcerative colitis. Some common anti-inflammatory painkillers can aggravate bowel symptoms in some people, so check before taking them.

What if diarrhoea continues after I start medicine?

Contact your care team if diarrhoea persists, worsens, contains increasing blood, or is accompanied by fever, dehydration, or significant pain. The cause and treatment response may need reassessment.
