What should you know about anti estrogen letrozole?

It belongs to a group called aromatase inhibitors. Its suitability depends on factors such as the cancer's hormone-receptor status, menopause status, other treatments, and individual health risks.

Aromatase is an enzyme that helps the body make estrogen after menopause. Letrozole blocks this enzyme, reducing the estrogen available to stimulate hormone-sensitive cancer cells. It does not work like chemotherapy and is not suitable for every cancer.

Common treatment concerns include hot flushes, sweating, tiredness, headache, joint or muscle discomfort, and vaginal dryness. Lower estrogen can also reduce bone strength over time, so the care team may assess bone health and discuss exercise, nutrition, or medicine when appropriate.

Take letrozole exactly as prescribed, at a consistent time, with or without food. If a dose is missed, follow the instructions from your oncology team or medicine leaflet; do not double a dose unless a clinician specifically directs you.

Tell the prescriber about all medicines and supplements, any history of weak bones or fractures, high cholesterol, liver problems, pregnancy possibility, or breastfeeding. Do not stop because of joint pain or hot flushes without contacting the team: changing symptom management or the treatment plan may make therapy easier to continue.

Keep scheduled reviews and report new symptoms. Weight-bearing activity and resistance exercise may support bones and mobility when medically suitable; ask for advice tailored to your fitness and fracture risk.

Contact the oncology team promptly for severe or persistent joint pain, a new fracture, marked weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or a widespread rash. They can assess whether letrozole, another illness, or another medicine is contributing.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, chest pain, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, difficulty speaking, or a sudden severe headache. These symptoms require urgent assessment regardless of their cause.

Ask why letrozole fits your cancer and menopause status, how long it is planned, and how response will be followed. Also discuss whether you need a bone-health assessment, which symptoms should trigger a same-day call, and what options exist if side effects disrupt sleep, movement, work, or intimacy.
