Anti-D immunoglobulin injection site: what to know

A clinician chooses an appropriate muscle and cleans the skin before giving the injection. You may feel a brief sharp sensation, pressure, or aching as the medicine is administered. Local soreness, warmth, redness, or a small area of swelling can occur afterward. These changes are usually limited to the injection area and should be monitored rather than repeatedly pressed or rubbed.

The site does not show whether the medicine is working. The important details are that the correct product was given, the dose was recorded, and it was provided for the reason identified by your maternity team. Tell the clinician if you have a skin condition, infection, or previous reaction at injection sites.

Keep the skin clean and avoid scratching it. Wear clothing that does not rub the area, and mention the discomfort to your maternity team if it interferes with movement or sleep. Do not apply a new cream or take medicine for pain in pregnancy without checking that it is suitable for you. Keep your treatment record and note when the soreness began and whether the redness is spreading.

If the injection was given after bleeding, injury, or a procedure, continue to follow the separate advice for that event. Caring for the site does not replace maternity follow-up.

Contact the service that gave the injection if pain, swelling, or redness is worsening, spreading beyond the site, or accompanied by fever or drainage. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, widespread hives, severe dizziness, or collapse. During pregnancy, urgent bleeding, severe pain, fainting, or reduced fetal movement also needs maternity assessment, regardless of the injection site.

Ask which muscle was used, how long local soreness may last, what changes should be reported, and who to contact outside clinic hours. Confirm that the injection date and product have been added to your pregnancy records.
