Anterior Dislocation of the Elbow: What You Should Know

How the structures involved in Elbow Dislocation differ from normal

Short answer

An anterior elbow dislocation is an uncommon, serious injury in which the forearm bones move forward relative to the upper arm bone and require urgent medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Joint change
The forearm bones shift forward relative to the upper arm bone.
Immediate action
Support the arm as found and seek emergency assessment.
Avoid
Do not attempt to relocate or force the elbow straight.

Direct answer

The injury can damage ligaments, nerves, blood vessels or nearby bone. Do not try to straighten or relocate the elbow yourself; keep it supported in the position found while arranging emergency evaluation.

What the injury means

At the elbow, the upper arm bone meets the two forearm bones. In an anterior dislocation, this normal alignment is lost and the forearm shifts toward the front. A clinician examines the skin, pulse, hand temperature, sensation and finger movement because circulation or nerve function may be affected.

Imaging helps confirm alignment and identify an associated fracture. The visible deformity and pain may resemble other severe elbow injuries, so examination and imaging are needed to define the damage.

What to do now

Stop using the arm, remove rings or a watch before swelling increases, and support the limb with folded clothing or a sling without forcing its angle. Cover any wound with a clean dressing. Avoid food and drink until the emergency team advises otherwise, because sedation or an operation may be considered.

Treatment often begins with pain control and careful restoration of alignment by a trained clinician. The arm may then be immobilised briefly. Follow-up checks assess stability, and guided movement or physiotherapy may help restore motion without placing excessive stress on healing tissues.

When to seek care

Seek emergency care immediately for an elbow that looks displaced after injury, an open wound near the joint, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, or inability to move the arm. A pale, blue or cold hand, a weak or absent wrist pulse, numbness, or new finger weakness may signal impaired blood flow or nerve injury and needs immediate attention.

After treatment, return urgently if pain suddenly worsens, the splint feels increasingly tight, sensation changes, fingers become difficult to move, or the hand changes colour or temperature.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether imaging shows a fracture, whether the elbow is stable after reduction, how to protect the joint, and when movement should begin. Clarify which hand or finger changes should prompt an urgent return and what rehabilitation milestones will guide a safe return to work, driving or sport.

Questions people ask

Can I put an anterior elbow dislocation back myself?

No. Moving the joint without examination can worsen injury to bone, nerves or blood vessels. Keep the arm supported and obtain emergency care.

Will I need physiotherapy after the elbow is realigned?

Rehabilitation is often used after the clinician confirms that movement is safe. The plan depends on joint stability, associated injuries and stiffness.

Why are the pulse and fingers checked repeatedly?

These checks help detect changes in blood flow and nerve function before and after the joint is realigned.
