Antacids for heartburn during pregnancy

Pregnancy changes digestion and pressure around the stomach, so burning behind the breastbone or an acidic taste may become more noticeable. An antacid neutralises stomach acid for short-term relief; it does not prevent every episode or treat another underlying cause.

Products sold as antacids can contain different active ingredients, and combination remedies may also include an alginate that forms a barrier above stomach contents. Suitability depends on the ingredient, your stage of pregnancy, other medicines, and conditions such as kidney disease or high blood pressure.

Do not assume that every over-the-counter indigestion product is interchangeable. Some preparations contain sodium, aspirin-like ingredients, or other components that need individual advice during pregnancy. A pharmacist can check the exact label rather than relying only on the brand name.

Follow the product instructions and the dose confirmed by your maternity clinician or pharmacist. Antacids can affect absorption of iron, folic acid, and some prescription medicines, so ask how far apart to take them. Avoid exceeding the label dose or combining several heartburn products without a medication check.

Smaller meals, remaining upright after eating, and noticing foods that reliably trigger symptoms may reduce episodes. If symptoms recur despite these measures, request a review because another pregnancy-suitable acid-reducing medicine may be more appropriate.

Arrange prompt assessment for trouble or pain when swallowing, repeated vomiting, black stools, blood in vomit, unexplained weight loss, severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, or symptoms that keep returning despite appropriate treatment.

Call emergency services for crushing or severe chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. These features should not be treated as ordinary heartburn. During pregnancy, also seek urgent maternity advice for severe pain beneath the ribs with headache, vision changes, or sudden swelling.

Bring the package or a photo of its active ingredients. Ask whether the product suits your pregnancy and health conditions, when to take it around prenatal supplements, how long to self-treat, and what alternative is appropriate if relief is inadequate.
