Antacids for indigestion: when they help and when to seek care

Short answer
An antacid may ease acid-related indigestion for a short time, but it will not help every cause of upper abdominal discomfort.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Will an antacid relieve indigestion?
It is most relevant when symptoms include an acidic or burning feeling. Fullness, bloating, nausea, or pain can arise for other reasons, so a poor response is a reason to reconsider the cause rather than keep increasing the dose.
Why the symptom pattern matters
Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, describes discomfort in the upper abdomen rather than a single disease. It may include burning, early fullness, uncomfortable fullness after eating, belching, or nausea.
Antacids neutralise stomach acid already present. They can relieve an acid component but do not treat gallstones, clear Helicobacter pylori infection, or heal a peptic ulcer. Gastritis and reflux can also present with upper digestive discomfort and may need a different plan.
Practical steps for occasional symptoms
Read the package instructions and use only the stated amount for the stated period. Ingredients vary between products; constipation, diarrhoea, wind, or stomach cramps can occur. Stop and seek advice if the medicine seems to worsen your symptoms.
Tell a pharmacist about prescriptions, supplements, kidney problems, heart failure, sodium restriction, pregnancy, or treatment for a child before choosing a product. Because an antacid can interfere with absorption, the pharmacist can tell you how long to separate it from each regular medicine.
Eating slowly, choosing smaller portions, limiting personal food or drink triggers, and avoiding lying flat soon after meals can help clarify and reduce meal-related discomfort. Keep a brief note of timing, foods, pain location, and response to treatment if episodes recur.
Symptoms that should not be self-treated
Call emergency services for chest pressure or severe chest or upper abdominal pain accompanied by breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. A cardiac problem can feel like indigestion.
Seek prompt assessment for vomiting blood, black stools, persistent vomiting, difficulty swallowing, food sticking, unexplained weight loss, anaemia, jaundice, fever with significant abdominal pain, or sudden severe pain. Make a non-emergency appointment when indigestion persists, repeatedly returns, wakes you, or changes noticeably.
What to discuss at an appointment
Describe whether discomfort is burning, cramping, or pressure; where it sits; its relation to meals; and whether you also have reflux, nausea, or altered stools. Ask if your medicines could irritate the stomach, whether testing for an underlying cause is appropriate, and which treatment matches the symptom pattern.

Questions people ask
Does relief from an antacid prove excess acid caused my indigestion?
No. Improvement suggests acid may contribute to the sensation, but response to a medicine does not establish a diagnosis. Repeated episodes still warrant review.
Can antacids treat indigestion caused by Helicobacter pylori?
They may briefly reduce an acid-related symptom, but they do not clear the infection. Confirmed infection requires a clinician-directed treatment plan.
What should I record before seeing a clinician?
Note the discomfort's location and character, its timing around meals, associated symptoms, medicines taken, possible triggers, and whether an antacid changed it.
