Antacids for heartburn: relief, safe use and warning signs

They are intended for short-term symptom relief. Heartburn that keeps returning, disrupts sleep, or needs frequent medication deserves a clinical assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone caused when acidic stomach contents irritate the food pipe. An antacid reduces acidity already present in the stomach, so relief may begin relatively quickly but may not last as long as medicines that reduce acid production.

Recurring heartburn can accompany acid reflux or a hiatus hernia. An antacid may soften the burning sensation without correcting reflux, healing irritation, or showing why symptoms have become frequent.

Choose a product suitable for you and follow its package directions. Different antacids contain different ingredients, and some can cause constipation or diarrhoea. Do not exceed the stated dose or continue longer than directed.

Antacids can change how other medicines are absorbed. Check the required spacing with a pharmacist, particularly if you take regular prescriptions. Seek tailored advice before use if you have kidney disease, heart failure, need to limit sodium, are pregnant, or are giving the medicine to a child.

Smaller meals, avoiding lying down soon after eating, and noticing foods or drinks that trigger burning may reduce repeat episodes.

Get emergency help for new or severe chest pressure or pain, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Do not assume these symptoms are indigestion or wait for an antacid to work.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for trouble or pain with swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, anaemia, or steadily worsening symptoms. Book a routine review if heartburn repeatedly returns or over-the-counter treatment is no longer enough.

Ask whether your symptom pattern suggests reflux, whether any current medicine could be contributing, and which antacid ingredient fits your health conditions. Also clarify how to separate it from other medicines and when persistent symptoms should prompt a different treatment or investigation.
