Another name for hepatitis B

HBV is the abbreviation for hepatitis B virus. A clinician may describe an infection as acute when it is newly acquired or chronic when it remains in the body. Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver, but the name alone does not show the stage of infection or how the liver is functioning. Some people have no noticeable symptoms; when hepatitis B does cause symptoms, fatigue, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine or yellowing of the skin and eyes may occur.

If a test suggests hepatitis B, arrange a clinical review to clarify which markers were positive and whether further blood tests or liver assessment are needed. Avoid sharing razors, toothbrushes or needles, and cover open cuts because blood can transmit HBV. Do not donate blood. Check medicines, supplements and alcohol use with a clinician, since the liver processes many substances. Household and sexual contacts may need testing and vaccination advice.

Seek prompt medical assessment for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, repeated vomiting, increasing abdominal pain or unusual sleepiness. Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools or severe weakness. After a possible recent exposure to infected blood or body fluids, contact a healthcare service without delay because the timing of preventive care matters. Pregnancy also warrants early review so testing and care can reduce transmission to the baby.

Ask whether the results indicate a current infection, a past resolved infection or immunity from vaccination. Other useful questions include which follow-up tests are needed, whether household or sexual contacts should be tested, which medicines or supplements to avoid, and how to protect a newborn if you are pregnant.
