Short answer

Hepatitis B can cause no symptoms, or it may bring fatigue, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine and jaundice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible presentation
There may be no noticeable illness.
Liver-related clues
Yellow eyes, dark urine, pale stools and upper abdominal discomfort.
Confirmation
Hepatitis B is identified with specific blood tests.

The short answer

Other possible features include reduced appetite, vomiting, fever, joint aches and pale stools. Jaundice causes yellowing of the eyes or skin and may be easier to notice in the whites of the eyes. The absence of symptoms does not exclude infection.

Why a blood test matters

The hepatitis B virus infects liver cells. A recent infection may produce a flu-like illness or liver inflammation, while long-term infection may remain quiet for years. Symptoms cannot distinguish hepatitis B from other causes of hepatitis, gallbladder problems or unrelated infections.

Specific blood tests can show whether infection is present and help separate current infection, past exposure and vaccine-related immunity. Liver tests assess inflammation and function. Further blood tests, examination or imaging may be needed when ongoing infection is found.

What to do after symptoms or exposure

Arrange medical assessment if you develop jaundice or dark urine, or if blood, sexual fluids or shared needles may have exposed you to hepatitis B. Seek advice promptly after a recent exposure because preventive treatment may be time-sensitive. Testing can still be appropriate when you feel completely well.

Until you receive guidance, do not donate blood, share razors or toothbrushes, or share injection equipment. Cover open cuts and use barrier protection during sex. Do not share food or avoid ordinary social contact; hepatitis B is not spread through hugging, coughing or sharing utensils. Avoid alcohol and check medicines or supplements with a clinician if liver inflammation is suspected.

When liver symptoms are urgent

Get urgent medical help for confusion, unusual drowsiness, fainting, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, marked abdominal swelling or bleeding that is difficult to stop. These signs can accompany serious liver dysfunction or another emergency.

New jaundice should be assessed promptly, particularly with fever, pain, dark urine or pale stools. Urgency is based on the symptoms and the person's condition, not on an assumption that hepatitis B is the cause.

Points to discuss at the visit

Ask which hepatitis B markers are being tested, what the results mean for current infection and immunity, and whether liver monitoring is needed. Discuss vaccination for household or sexual contacts, ways to reduce transmission, and whether any medicines, supplements or alcohol should be avoided.

Questions people ask

Can hepatitis B be present without jaundice?

Yes. Many people with hepatitis B do not develop jaundice or any noticeable symptoms. Blood testing is needed after a relevant exposure or when screening is advised.

Does dark urine confirm hepatitis B?

No. Hepatitis B can present with dark urine, but dehydration, medicines, blood in urine and other liver or urinary conditions can also change urine colour.

Can hepatitis B spread through sharing a meal?

No. It is spread through infected blood and certain body fluids, not by sharing plates, food, drinks, hugs or casual contact.
