Ano ang OGTT? Understanding the glucose tolerance test

OGTT stands for oral glucose tolerance test. During pregnancy, it can help identify gestational diabetes, which develops when the body cannot keep blood glucose within the expected range. The result guides decisions about food, activity, glucose monitoring and, when needed, medication.

The clinic usually asks you to fast beforehand and gives specific instructions about water and regular medicines. A blood sample is taken before you drink a glucose solution. Further samples are then collected at set times so the laboratory can compare how glucose changes.

You will normally need to remain at the clinic and avoid eating during the test. Walking around, smoking or having anything other than what the clinic permits can affect the measurement. Follow the local instructions because test protocols can differ.

Confirm when fasting starts, whether plain water is allowed and how to handle morning medicines. Tell the team if you are unwell, have recently vomited, take medicines that affect glucose, or have had surgery that changes digestion. Bring something suitable to eat after the final sample if the clinic permits.

If a result is above the clinic's diagnostic threshold, the maternity team will explain monitoring and treatment. This finding is not a personal failure; pregnancy hormones can make insulin less effective. Attending follow-up helps protect both maternal health and the baby's growth.

Tell staff immediately if you feel faint, become very nauseated or vomit during the appointment; the test may need to stop or be rearranged. Outside the appointment, contact your maternity team promptly for persistent vomiting, inability to drink, marked weakness or symptoms of very high glucose such as unusual thirst with frequent urination and worsening illness.

Ask when to stop food, what you may drink, whether to take regular medicines and how long to allow for the visit. Afterward, ask when results will be available, who will contact you, what the clinic's result means, and whether any further glucose monitoring is required.
