Short answer

Insomnia means ongoing difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early despite having a suitable chance to sleep.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

It also affects daytime function, causing tiredness, irritability, slower thinking, reduced concentration, or worry about the next night. A brief spell may follow stress, pain, illness, travel, or schedule changes; persistent insomnia can continue after the original trigger has settled.

Why sleep becomes difficult

Sleep is influenced by body timing, sleep pressure, environment, health, and learned habits. Long or late naps can reduce sleep pressure, while irregular wake times can shift the body clock. Clock-watching and trying hard to force sleep may make the bed a cue for alertness and frustration.

Pain, reflux, breathing problems, restless legs, menopause symptoms, depression, anxiety, and some medicines can disrupt sleep. Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and late-night screen use may also contribute. Daytime sleepiness can occur with insomnia, but strong uncontrollable sleepiness may suggest another sleep disorder or insufficient sleep.

Changes that rebuild sleep

Choose a consistent wake time, seek daylight after waking, and reserve the bed for sleep and intimacy. Go to bed when sleepy rather than simply because the clock says so. If you remain awake and frustrated, move to a dim, quiet place for a calm activity, then return when drowsy.

Keep caffeine earlier in the day, avoid using alcohol as a sleep aid, and schedule exercise away from the final part of the evening if it feels activating. Write down sleep times, naps, substances, and symptoms for a short period. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia addresses sleep timing, habits, and unhelpful beliefs and is a standard structured treatment.

When to get medical support

Book an appointment when sleep difficulty persists, disrupts work or driving, or occurs with loud snoring, choking awakenings, uncomfortable leg sensations, pain, low mood, or medication changes. A clinician may assess sleep opportunity, mental health, physical symptoms, substances, shift work, and other sleep disorders.

Seek urgent help if sleeplessness comes with thoughts of self-harm, hallucinations, dangerous confusion, or unusually high energy with risky behaviour and little perceived need for sleep. Do not drive or operate machinery when you cannot stay alert.

What to ask about treatment

Ask whether a medicine or health condition may be disturbing sleep, whether cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia is available, and whether symptoms suggest sleep apnoea or restless legs. If a sleeping medicine is discussed, clarify its intended duration, next-day effects, interactions, and how it should be stopped.

Questions people ask

Is insomnia simply sleeping fewer hours?

No. Insomnia combines difficulty sleeping with daytime impact despite a reasonable opportunity to sleep. A naturally short sleep duration without distress or impairment is different.

Should I stay in bed until I fall asleep?

If lying awake is making you tense, briefly leaving the bed for a quiet activity in dim light can help weaken the link between bed and frustration. Return when sleepy.

Can alcohol improve insomnia?

Alcohol may bring initial drowsiness but can fragment later sleep and worsen snoring or breathing disturbances, so it is not a reliable insomnia treatment.
