Mumps is a contagious viral infection that often causes tender swelling of the parotid salivary glands near the ears and jaw. Fever, headache, tiredness, muscle aches, reduced appetite, and pain when chewing or swallowing may occur before or with the swelling.

The virus spreads through respiratory droplets and saliva. Complications can involve the testicles, ovaries, pancreas, or tissues around the brain, although gland swelling and general viral symptoms are the more familiar presentation.

Rest and drink regularly. Soft foods may be easier to eat, while sour foods and drinks can stimulate saliva and worsen gland pain. A warm or cool compress can soothe the jaw, and paracetamol or ibuprofen may help when suitable for the person's age and health.

Call the clinic before attending so staff can reduce exposure to others. Stay away from school, work, and close social contact for the period advised by the clinician, avoid sharing cups or utensils, cover coughs, and wash hands often. MMR vaccination helps prevent future mumps but does not treat an active infection.

Get urgent medical help for severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, unusual drowsiness, seizures, repeated vomiting, breathing or swallowing difficulty, severe abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration. Sudden testicular pain or swelling also requires prompt assessment.

Arrange another review if fever or swelling is worsening, symptoms are not following the expected course, or the diagnosis remains uncertain. Mention pregnancy, immune suppression, or recent contact with a vulnerable person when speaking to the healthcare team.

Ask how long separation from others should continue, which pain medicine and dose are suitable, whether testing or notification is needed, and what changes would suggest a complication. It can also help to review the household's vaccination status and plans for returning to school or work.
