Short answer

A fibroadenoma is a non-cancerous solid breast lump made of glandular and supporting breast tissue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Nature
Non-cancerous solid breast lump
Typical feel
Smooth, firm and mobile
Possible approach
Monitoring, biopsy or removal depending on findings

Direct answer

Fibroadenoma often presents as a smooth, firm, well-defined lump that moves under the skin and is usually not painful. Its size can change with hormonal shifts, but examination is needed because touch alone cannot confirm the cause of a breast lump.

How it is checked

A clinician asks when the lump appeared, whether it changes, and whether there are nipple, skin, or armpit symptoms. The breast and nearby lymph-node areas are examined. Breast Ultrasound can show whether a lump is solid and describe its shape and borders.

Imaging may be enough to support monitoring when the appearance and clinical findings fit. A Breast Biopsy takes a tissue sample when the diagnosis remains uncertain, the features are atypical, or confirmation would change management.

Monitoring and treatment

Arrange an assessment for every new breast lump rather than trying to identify it yourself. Note its location, when you first noticed it, and whether it seems to change with your menstrual cycle. Attend any recommended imaging or follow-up even when the lump causes no discomfort.

A confirmed fibroadenoma that is stable and not troublesome may be monitored. Breast Lump Excision may be discussed if it enlarges, causes discomfort, has uncertain findings, or creates significant concern. Removal leaves a scar and can alter breast shape, so benefits and downsides should be weighed together.

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment for a new lump, a known lump that grows or becomes hard or fixed, skin dimpling, new nipple inversion, bloody nipple discharge, persistent one-sided breast changes, or a lump in the armpit. These signs require evaluation but do not by themselves identify the cause.

Contact your care team sooner than planned if a monitored lump changes noticeably or new pain develops. Redness, heat, fever, or rapidly increasing swelling may indicate inflammation or infection and should be assessed without delay.

Deciding on follow-up

Ask which examination and imaging features favour fibroadenoma, whether biopsy is recommended, and what change should bring you back early. If removal is offered, discuss the expected scar, possible contour change, recovery, and whether the whole lump will be tested after surgery.

Questions people ask

Is a fibroadenoma breast cancer?

No. A fibroadenoma is benign. Any new or changing breast lump still needs assessment because different conditions can feel similar.

Does every fibroadenoma need to be removed?

No. A lump confidently diagnosed as fibroadenoma may be monitored if it is stable and not troublesome. Removal depends on changes, symptoms, diagnostic certainty, and preference.

Can a fibroadenoma change size?

Yes. It may respond to hormonal changes and can grow or shrink. A noticeable increase should be reviewed rather than assumed to be a normal variation.
