What should you know about annual hearing test?

Not everyone needs the same testing schedule. A clinician or hearing professional may recommend regular checks after previous hearing loss, repeated workplace noise, medicines that can affect hearing, ear disease, or difficulty following conversation. New symptoms should be assessed when they occur rather than saved for a routine visit.

Pure-tone testing finds the quietest sounds you respond to across different pitches. Speech testing can examine how clearly words are understood, and other checks may assess the eardrum or middle ear. Comparing results over time can reveal a pattern that is not obvious from day-to-day listening.

The test can describe the type and degree of hearing change, but further assessment may be needed to find the cause. Earwax, middle-ear problems, inner-ear conditions, noise exposure, and some medicines can affect hearing in different ways.

Note when the problem began, whether one or both ears are affected, and any tinnitus, dizziness, pain, discharge, pressure, or noise exposure. Bring a medicine list and previous hearing results. Tell the tester about hearing aids, ear surgery, infections, and communication situations you find difficult.

Avoid deliberately exposing yourself to loud sound before the appointment, and use suitable hearing protection in noisy settings. Do not push cotton buds or other objects into the ear canal. If wax blocks the canal, the clinician may advise safe removal before or alongside testing.

Seek urgent assessment for a sudden drop in hearing, particularly in one ear, even if there is no pain. Prompt care is also needed when hearing change follows a head injury or occurs with facial weakness, severe dizziness, new neurological symptoms, or significant ear discharge.

Book a clinical review for gradually worsening hearing, persistent one-sided tinnitus, recurring ear pain, blocked-ear sensation, or difficulty understanding speech. An annual appointment should not delay evaluation of a clear change from your usual hearing.

Ask whether the pattern suggests outer, middle, or inner-ear involvement; whether wax or medicines could be contributing; and what follow-up interval fits your risks. If hearing loss is confirmed, discuss communication strategies, hearing devices, workplace protection, and whether specialist assessment is appropriate.
