Swollen Ankles After Sunburn: Causes and Care

This can happen when the feet or lower legs were burned, especially after prolonged standing. Symmetrical puffiness that appears with red, sore sun-exposed skin may reflect the burn, although not every case of swollen ankles is caused by sun exposure.

Inflammation makes small skin vessels leaky, creating local tissue swelling. Gravity then shifts some of that fluid toward the feet and ankles. Tight sock lines may become visible, and the skin can feel stretched or tender.

Swelling in both ankles can also accompany heat exposure, prolonged sitting or standing, medicine effects, or heart, kidney, liver, and vein conditions. Swelling that began before the burn, extends well above it, or continues after the skin improves should not be assumed to come from sunburn.

Rest in a cool place and raise both legs on cushions so the ankles sit above heart level when practical. Apply cool, wet cloths to burned areas, take cool showers, and sip water regularly. Remove restrictive shoes, socks, or anklets.

A gentle fragrance-free moisturiser can soothe cooled, unbroken skin. Avoid direct ice, greasy products that trap heat, and deliberate peeling. If blisters form, do not puncture them; cover areas exposed to rubbing with a clean non-stick dressing.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, chest pressure, collapse, confusion, or swelling of the lips or tongue. Sudden calf pain or swelling that becomes much greater on one side also needs urgent assessment.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly for rapidly increasing puffiness, extensive blistering, severe pain, reduced urination, fever, spreading warmth or redness, pus, dizziness, or persistent vomiting. Review is also sensible when elevation does not help or the ankles remain swollen as the burn settles.

Tell the clinician which areas were exposed, when the burn and puffiness appeared, and whether pressing the skin leaves a dent. Ask if your medicines or an underlying circulation or organ problem could contribute, and which skin products are suitable while the surface heals.
