Caring for angular cheilitis at home

Short answer
At-home care for angular cheilitis focuses on keeping the mouth corners dry, protecting the skin with a bland ointment and avoiding further irritation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Home-care goal
- Dry, shield and avoid reopening the corners
- Simple barrier
- Plain petrolatum or a fragrance-free ointment
- Avoid
- Licking, picking and unprescribed medicated creams
The aim of self-care
Cracks at the mouth angles reopen when saliva, licking and wide mouth movements repeatedly disrupt the fragile surface. Barrier care reduces that contact and gives the outer skin a chance to recover. It does not, however, identify or treat every yeast or bacterial infection.
A first or mild episode may settle with careful protection. Recurrent, crusted or spreading changes need assessment because the same appearance can arise from different causes, and each cause calls for a different medicine.
A practical home routine
After eating, rinse gently with water and pat the corners completely dry using a clean, soft cloth. Apply a thin layer of plain petrolatum or another fragrance-free barrier. Reapply when saliva or washing removes it. Choose softer foods temporarily if opening the mouth pulls the splits apart.
Avoid licking, picking, harsh scrubs, fragranced balms and shared lip products. Do not use leftover antibiotics, antifungals or topical corticosteroids on guesswork; an unsuitable product can irritate the area or obscure an infection. Clean dentures as directed and remove them overnight if your dental clinician has advised this.
Limits of home treatment
Contact a clinician if pain or cracking worsens despite barrier care, the problem repeatedly returns, or eating becomes difficult. Seek earlier attention for pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, substantial swelling or severe pain. A persistent sore, firm patch or unexplained bleeding on one side also needs examination rather than continued self-treatment.
Preparing for a consultation
Tell the clinician which remedies you tried and whether dentures, dry mouth, eczema or lip licking affect the area. Ask whether a yeast or bacterial treatment is needed, which emollient suits the lip folds, and whether repeated episodes warrant a dental review or tests for a contributing condition.

Questions people ask
Can lip balm help angular cheilitis?
A bland fragrance-free ointment can shield the corners. Flavoured, fragranced or tingling balms may cause further irritation.
Can I treat recurring angular cheilitis only at home?
Recurring episodes merit assessment for infection, saliva pooling, dry mouth, denture fit, eczema and possible health or nutritional contributors.
