What should you know about angry red eyes?

Redness without those warning signs may come from dryness, allergy, conjunctivitis, smoke, dust, prolonged screen use, or rubbing. The pattern of symptoms and whether one or both eyes are affected help a clinician narrow the cause.

Itching with watery symptoms in both eyes fits an allergic pattern, while sticky discharge and eyelids that crust together can occur with conjunctivitis. A gritty or burning feeling may accompany dryness or surface irritation. These clues overlap, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

A sharply defined red patch on the white of the eye can reflect a small surface blood vessel leak. By contrast, deep pain, blurred vision, halos, severe headache, nausea, or discomfort in bright light can point to a problem beyond simple surface irritation.

Stop wearing contact lenses until the eye feels normal and the cause is clear. Do not share towels, eye cosmetics, drops, or lens equipment. Wash your hands before touching the area, avoid rubbing, and use a clean cool compress for comfort.

Preservative-free lubricating drops may soothe uncomplicated dryness or irritation. Avoid using leftover antibiotic drops or someone else's medicine, and avoid redness-removing drops as a substitute for assessment. If dust or a mild irritant entered the eye, rinse gently with clean water; chemical exposure requires immediate, continuous rinsing while urgent help is arranged.

Seek urgent assessment for reduced or distorted vision, moderate or severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, a chemical splash, penetrating injury, a trapped foreign body, a misshapen pupil, severe headache with nausea, or redness after eye surgery. Contact-lens wearers with a painful red eye should remove the lens and obtain prompt care because the cornea may be involved.

Arrange a routine clinical review if discharge persists, symptoms keep returning, the eyelids become increasingly swollen, or redness is not settling with simple measures. A clinician may check visual acuity, the cornea, pupil responses, discharge, medicines, allergies, and recent exposures before recommending treatment.

Ask whether the cornea is affected, whether your symptoms fit allergy, infection, or dryness, and when contact lenses can safely be restarted. Mention any vision change, pain, light sensitivity, discharge, recent illness, new eye product, injury, chemical exposure, or drops already used.
