Can an ultrasound show anencephaly at 8 weeks?

At this stage the embryo is small, skull development is still being assessed, and the view can be limited by pregnancy dating, position, or the scanning route. A later targeted ultrasound is generally needed to confirm or exclude a suspected cranial abnormality.

Anencephaly involves failure of major skull and brain structures to develop. Those structures become easier to assess as pregnancy advances. An early scan designed to locate the pregnancy, assess viability, and estimate gestational age may not provide the detailed cranial views used for diagnosis.

A concerning image is not the same as a confirmed finding. Dates may be earlier than expected, and technical factors can obscure fine anatomy. Conversely, a reassuring eight-week image does not replace the later examination of fetal structures.

Ask the clinician exactly what could and could not be seen and when repeat imaging should occur. Keep the report and images for the next appointment. If the concern persists, a fetal-medicine specialist can perform a targeted scan and explain whether the skull and brain findings meet diagnostic criteria.

Do not change prescribed medicines or supplements because of an uncertain image unless your treating clinician advises it. Continue routine antenatal care while awaiting clarification, and seek emotional support if the uncertainty is difficult to manage.

Get urgent assessment for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe one-sided or persistent abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, fever with worsening illness, or difficulty breathing. These can signal an urgent early-pregnancy problem and should not wait for a scheduled ultrasound. They do not diagnose anencephaly; the urgency comes from the symptom itself.

Ask how gestational age was calculated, whether the scan route or image quality limited the view, and which specific cranial feature prompted concern. Confirm the timing and purpose of the next scan, whether specialist review is planned, and when you should expect an explanation of the result.
