Anencephaly symptoms during pregnancy

Pregnancy nausea, tiredness, breast tenderness, or changes in fetal movement cannot diagnose or exclude it. A clinician assesses the baby's skull and brain on ultrasound rather than relying on how the pregnancy feels.

Anencephaly is a severe neural tube defect in which major parts of the brain and skull do not develop. Ultrasound may show the characteristic absence of skull bones and brain tissue. If a scan raises concern, a specialist may repeat the imaging or perform a more detailed examination before discussing the finding with you.

An abnormal blood-screening result can prompt further assessment, but screening alone is not a diagnosis. Anencephaly is not caused by something you noticed, felt, ate, or did during an ordinary day of pregnancy.

Arrange the recommended follow-up scan and ask whether it will be performed by a fetal-medicine specialist. Bring the earlier images and reports if the appointment is at another centre. The care team can explain what was seen, whether another test could clarify the diagnosis, and what pregnancy-care choices are available.

It may help to take a support person and write down questions beforehand. If the diagnosis is confirmed, request clear information about expected outcomes, emotional support, and planning for the pregnancy and birth.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, leaking fluid, fainting, a seizure, breathing difficulty, or a severe headache with vision changes. Later in pregnancy, contact your maternity unit promptly if the baby's usual movement pattern decreases. These warning signs need assessment regardless of whether anencephaly has been suspected or confirmed.

Ask which ultrasound features caused concern, how confident the finding is, and whether specialist imaging is needed. You can also ask who will coordinate your care, what support is available for you and your family, and whether preconception counselling and folic acid planning should be discussed before a future pregnancy.
